Rice farmers in the western Sacramento Valley are feeling the pinch of this year’s lowest-ever water allocation from the Central Valley Project. Despite Glenn-Colusa Irrigation District’s senior water rights on the Sacramento River, the effects of drought are stark in this agricultural hub.

For grower Don Bransford, GCID’s Board President, this is the first time in 43 years his fields will go unplanted. Impacts on crop dependent businesses – farmworkers, rice processors, fertilizer sellers, equipment dealers, local restaurants, tire shops and truckers – will be severe.
